Wedding planner myth #1: I don't need one, I can do it myself!
We're working our way through a list of wedding planner myths. First cab off the rank? "Planning a wedding can't be that hard - I can do it all myself." You might be asking yourself, do I really need a wedding planner?
OK! So, first things first- can you do it yourself? Yes, you absolutely can! Is it that hard? Yes, it absolutely can be!
Some people will love the huge amount of decisions to make, the meticulous research, the attention to detail, the creative flair, the skill for being organised. And some will not. And that's OK! We all have different personalities, and things we are good at. If you feel that you are really organised, and have the right skillset to plan a wedding, then you should absolutely go for it. It can be lots of fun to plan a wedding, and there are lots of little jobs to do which are really enjoyable. (Helloooo cake tasting!)
There are some bits though, which, depending on your personality, are not so fun. And these are the jobs a wedding planner or an on-the-day coordinator can help you with.
If you're a creative person, thought by some to be dominated by the right side of the brain, you might struggle with the more methodical tasks of researching and analysing. For you, this is 'the boring stuff' - staying focussed and organised is really hard when you aren't engaged with the task. And this could be where mistakes happen!
If you're move left-brained and analytical, you'll love spreadsheeting all the costs and staying on budget, but when it comes time to creating a well thought out and cohesive look that really showcases you and your partner's personalities..... yikes. You might have no idea where to start.
Maybe you don't mind keeping records, but find it really boring trying to look in Instagram what shade of pink flowers goes with your red bridesmaid's dresses. (Hang on, will pink and red go together at all?) Maybe you love choosing wedding cakes and invitations, but really don't like all the back and forward emailing with the suppliers.
This is where a wedding planner comes in, to scoop up all of the jobs you don't want to do, and will happily leave the things you enjoy to you. Some of these jobs can be labour intensive, and take a lot of time and effort to do. Some are just not that fun - handwriting thank you cards after the wedding is the polite thing to do, but not the funnest way to spend a Friday night (but we don't mind - honest!).
So maybe the way to think about it is to think of a wedding planner as something that you need, but something that you want. Some tasks in planning a wedding are tedious, some are complicated, some are really time consuming, and some just don't play to your particular skillset.
Yes, you can do it yourself. But the question to ask yourself, is do you want to?
